American Swedish Historical Museum — Website Design & Build
Design and development of the museum's new website showcasing exhibits and collection highlights, from Vikings to the New Sweden Colony to contemporary Scandinavian culture.
In 2017, I was involved in designing and building the American Swedish Historical Museum's new website. The museum in South Philadelphia — the oldest Swedish museum in the United States, founded in 1926 — tells the story of Scandinavians in America, from Viking-age explorers and the New Sweden Colony (1638–1655) along the Delaware River to contemporary Scandinavian-American identity. The project created a modern digital presence to showcase exhibits, collection highlights, and programming to visitors before and after their in-person experience — surfacing the breadth of the museum's twelve exhibition galleries in a way that invited exploration.
Exhibit & Collection Presentation
A site structure built around the museum's core content: current and past exhibitions, and collection highlights. Each object in the collection — from Viking swords and cloak pins to John Ericsson's solar engine prototype, Anders Zorn etchings, and the Sinnickson chest from the New Sweden Colony — is presented with full metadata, provenance, and interpretive text so visitors can engage with the stories behind the objects.
Gallery & Event Information
Clear navigation and pages for the museum's twelve galleries, event listings, and visit information (hours, admission, location). The site supports the museum's dual roles as a cultural institution and a venue for weddings, corporate meetings, and private events.
Multilingual Welcome
The homepage reflects the museum's inclusive spirit with welcoming phrases in multiple Scandinavian languages — Välkommen, Velkommen, Velkominn, Tervetuloa, Bures boahtin — extending a greeting to diverse Nordic communities and visitors.
The site continues to serve as the museum's primary digital presence at americanswedish.org, where they promote exhibitions, share collection highlights, and connect with their community.
